Frontend Administration

Description

Build the Administration console: the internal operations tool for the DigiClips capture and processing system, as opposed to anything a search engine user sees. It runs on the sponsor's local system, with remote access from desktop, Mac and smartphone. See the administration specification and the options page.

Administrator accounts are separate from search engine accounts, and only a super administrator creates one. On Ubuntu, never run as root; always use a user account.

Monitoring the capture system

Every machine checks in, from both the back end and the front end, writing errors to the database and surfacing them as charts with email alerts to the administrators. One GUI, with an icon per machine, links to every server in the system, and administrators can add new machines to it.

Things that have to be caught and mailed out: broken links, so they can be relinked; lost antenna frequencies, which change and must be tracked against the streaming of each station; a lost antenna signal; and missed processed data, which falls back to the backup to recover and may turn out to be an ffmpeg problem. Test a fix on one machine before rolling it across the system.

Managing media sources

Add and remove stations across every source: free to air antenna television, web streaming television, radio, podcasts, SiriusXM, cable, newspapers, magazines, social media and blogs. Each needs a web or GUI interface rather than a code change, and station lists come from public directories such as stationindex.com and antennaweb.org.

The capture overlap window is configurable per source. It is ten minutes today and the sponsor wants five to ten, or real time, with a couple of minutes either side of a segment; cable is currently thirty-four minutes and should match.

Retention is also administrative: television, radio and podcast data auto-delete from MySQL and the archive disk after thirty days, cable after ninety.

Streaming media should extend to every continent, and foreign broadcasters transmit differently from US stations, which the capture side has to allow for.

Video handling

Control resolution up and down, and compress where it helps, for example 1920x1080 or 1280x720 down to 720x480, with the choice left flexible and the originals kept at full resolution.

Users, billing and content

Approve new users and verify them when they sign in to the Options and Email Alerts pages. Two kinds: general public, free and funded by advertising, and subscribers, with no ads, a chosen duration that can auto-renew, media analytics, downloads, the video and audio editor, and data transfer.

Administer advertising on the general public pages, language translation starting with Spanish in both directions, and media and journalist contacts in a relational database, targeted at the general public, subscribers or both. Nielsen analytics are added here too, with control over what is released.

Also: capture client email addresses so administrators can mail them, keep track of comments, and give administrators their own help page.

Housekeeping

Back up all processed media data, with a second capture in a separate location. Auto-delete cookies. Keep dependencies updated and relinked, including npm audit fix. Scheduled shutdown and reboot must bring the recording software back up by itself.

Development set

Build against the Denver, Colorado market first: the local free to air and web streaming television stations, the AM and FM radio list, local newspapers and magazines, then social media across X, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram, blogs and podcasts. Everything else is added later through the console itself.

Problem statement

To learn about administrating a whole computer system and to have a real world computers science work experience

Objectives

To help present the software up on www.digiclipsproject.com/administration

Minimum qualifications

Software to be familiar with would be Ubuntu-Mate 22.04, C, nodejs, react, angular 20 https://angular.dev/ typescript, mysql relational database, putting up on AWS Amazon Lightsail.

We have students work remotely on our local system through digi-frontend for development testing debugging then put up on DigiClips Github and for final deliverable and presentation put up front end on AWS Amazon Lightsail www.digiclipsproject.com
