Create a reliable, non-proprietary, hardwired digital user interface for the OSU Solar Trailer’s charge controller and inverter system, which communicates over a local hardwired network within the Trailer. If possible, also improve existing interface with the battery management system and allow for battery capacity expansion.
The OSU Solar Trailer is a portable electrical and educational device that captures and stores solar energy in a sensitive lithium iron phosphate battery pack. Its purpose is to educate about photovoltaic energy technologies and provide a quiet, renewable, portable power supply.
The current UI system relies on a wireless connection to access all configuration settings and data. The wireless connection is via a Schneider gateway device that then is hardwired to two other Schneider components, an inverter and a charge controller. If the gateway device ages out, is damaged, stolen or otherwise compromised, the user has no ability to change critical control settings on the devices, leaving the batteries and other systems vulnerable. Additionally, the battery management system is a separate control system to ensure safety and protect basic battery health. Ideally, it would be integrated into the new UI as well.
