Zombie Apocalypse 4X Strategy Desktop Game

PublishedCS46X-ECAMPUS Capstone (30 weeks)Student proposed

Description

Create a playable desktop 4X strategy game set during a zombie apocalypse. The game should support the genre’s core activities—exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination—while allowing the team to define the specific mechanics and interpretation of the setting. JavaScript or Python may be used for the main implementation, with Rust or Node.js also permitted according to the team’s preference.

Problem statement

Existing mainstream 4X strategy games generally do not use a zombie-apocalypse setting as their central theme. This project addresses that thematic gap by adapting the genre’s core mechanics to a world shaped by a zombie apocalypse. The team will determine which mechanics best support that setting.

Objectives

  • Deliver a playable desktop 4X strategy game.
  • Demonstrate distinct but integrated mechanics for exploration, expansion, exploitation, and extermination.
  • Support hotseat play for at least three participants.
  • Support at least one pseudo-AI (CPU) opponent.
  • Prioritize functional gameplay; treat art and audio as secondary polish because of the project’s scope.

Minimum qualifications

  • Basic programming ability in JavaScript or Python.
  • Familiarity with 4X strategy games and their core gameplay concepts.
  • Willingness to conduct research and commit the time needed to build a substantial game project.

Preferred qualifications

  • Stronger proficiency in any programming language.
  • Experience designing and integrating full-stack systems.
  • Experience developing games or implementing turn-based strategy mechanics.
