OHSU School of Nursing Simulation Case Database

PublishedCS46X-CORVALLIS Capstone (30 weeks)

Description

The OHSU School of Nursing’s simulation programs across multiple campuses need a shared way to develop, find, review, and maintain simulation-based learning experiences. This project will create a centralized simulation template database for faculty.

The database will let faculty create new cases, convert existing cases to a standardized template, and search, adapt, and share cases across campuses. Records will be searchable by course, population, clinical topic, learner level, modality, competencies, and learning outcomes. Unlike simple file storage, the system will support simulation quality, collaboration, curricular alignment, and continuous improvement.

Potential features include peer-review and approval workflows, prompts for annual case review, version tracking, and curricular mapping across courses and campuses. The completed system will help faculty find existing resources, reduce duplicated development work, promote consistent practices, and integrate simulation more intentionally throughout the nursing curriculum.

Problem statement

Simulation cases and supporting materials are currently developed and maintained across multiple courses, faculty members, and OHSU campuses. Traditional file-storage systems can make it difficult to identify available simulations, determine whether cases are current, consistently review materials for quality, and understand how simulation experiences align with curricular outcomes and competencies.

A centralized, value-added simulation database could improve collaboration and resource sharing while providing structured processes for simulation development, quality assurance, curricular mapping, and ongoing case maintenance.

Objectives

  • Develop a centralized, searchable database for simulation cases and associated learning materials used across OHSU School of Nursing campuses.
  • Define and implement a standardized simulation template, and establish a process for transitioning existing cases into it.
  • Implement search and filtering by clinical topic, course, learner level, population, modality, competencies, learning outcomes, and campus use.
  • Develop a peer-review and quality-assurance workflow for newly created or substantially revised simulations.
  • Add reminders or prompts for periodic and annual case review.
  • Track case versions and document revisions to preserve each simulation’s history.
  • Support curricular mapping by linking simulations to course outcomes, program outcomes, competencies, and relevant educational frameworks or standards.
  • Provide ways for faculty to identify where competencies and learning outcomes are addressed and where gaps or redundancies may exist.
  • Support cross-campus collaboration, adaptation, and sharing while reducing duplicated development work.
  • Design the database to accommodate future simulation management, evaluation, and quality-improvement functions.
